There are two types of Alpacas.
Here at Bruce Farm, we have the Huacaya breed, the "teddy bear". The Suri alpaca is known for its "dreadlocks" fleece.

Alpacas originated in South America, where they are kept in herds grazing at altitudes of 3,500 to 5,000 metres above sea level in the Andes of Southern Peru, Western Bolivia, Ecuador, and Northern Chile.

Alpacas are similar to, and often confused with, the llama. They are actually closely related, both being part of the camelid family, however, alpacas are noticeably smaller than llamas.

Alpaca Communication
Alpacas communicate through body language. They spit to show dominance, or when they are in distress, fearful, or feel agitated. Male alpacas are more aggressive than females, and tend to establish dominance within their herd group. In some cases, alpha males will immobilize the head and neck of a weaker or challenging male in order to show their strength and dominance.

Alpaca Fleece
Alpacas come in 22 different coloured fleeces, all incredibly soft and lustrous.  Alpaca fleece is as soft as cashmere,  but warmer, lighter and stronger than wool, and is enjoyed by spinners and weavers for garments which can be worn next-to-the-skin.

Here at Bruce Farm, we love making our own products from our amazing alpacas, and love being able to share them with others through our onsite shop.
